Selin ATAY-TDO- (14.02.2020)- The UN security council has passed a resolution mandating a multinational operation to oversee a ceasefire in Libya.
The UK-backed resolution, calling for a ceasefire without preconditions and an immediate end to the supply of arms to both sides, was passed by 14 votes to zero, with one abstention from Russia.
The UNSC resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Libya, an end to arms supplies to the parties, compliance with the international arms embargo, the withdrawal of all mercenaries in the country and the non-intervention of any member state in the crisis.
The conference on Libya, held in Berlin on 19 January with the participation of the Libyan parties and the international community, called for a ceasefire and dialogue.
Khalifa Haftar, the leader of the illegitimate armed forces in eastern Libya, continues his violations despite a call for a ceasefire at a Berlin Conference on January 19.
Libya has been in turmoil since 2011 when a civil war toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi who was later killed.
