UK WILL ‘ALWAYS BE WELCOME BACK’ IN EU, SAYS EUROPEAN COMMISSION VICE PRESIDENT

27/12/2019

İrem UZUN -TDO- “Britain has been unnecessarily damaged by Brexit and more will follow”, the vice-president of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, has written in a “love letter” to the British people in which he promises a warm welcome back should attitudes change. "Since I went to a British school, you have always been part of me. Now you are leaving, and it breaks my heart," telling the UK. “I’m like an old lover”, he continued: “Truth be told, I felt deeply hurt when you decided to leave. Three years later I am just sad that a member of our family wants to sever our ties”.

Writing in the Guardian, Timmermans, a former Dutch foreign minister who was also deputy to Jean-Claude Juncker, professed his excessive 'love for Britain', recalling how he attended St. George's British International School in Rome as a youngster.  The letter comes as Boris Johnson prepares to legally sever ties with the bloc on 31 January after winning the healthiest Conservative majority at a general election since Margaret Thatcher’s last victory at the ballot box.  Just before MPs departed the House of Commons for the Christmas recess, the prime minister’s Brexit deal passed its first hurdle with a thumping majority of 124.

It is expected that negotiations over the future relationship between the EU and the UK will begin in earnest the following month as both sides attempt to thrash out a free trade agreement before Mr. Johnson’s strict December 2020 deadline.
