U.S. OFFERS $5M FOR CAPTURE OF VENEZUELA CHIEF JUSTICE

İrem UZUN -TDO- The United States on Tuesday announced a $5-million reward for information leading to the arrest of Venezuelan Chief Justice Maikel Moreno, accusing him of taking bribes and participating in transnational organized crime. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the judge, an ally of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, had "personally received money or property bribes to influence the outcome of civil and criminal cases in Venezuela," in recent years.

Moreno quickly rejected the reward, saying it was based on lies aimed at undermining him and will only strengthen his “autonomy and independence” as the head of Venezuela’s high court.  “This is not the first time a mouthpiece of the U.S. empire has tried to attack me,” Moreno said in a statement posted on Facebook. “They will never succeed because the independence and sovereignty of our homeland is not up for discussion.”

Venezuelan foreign ministry said late on Tuesday "Venezuela rejects once again the illegal and coercive actions of the Donald Trump government against the Venezuelan people and its constitutional institutions". The statement continued as Washington "disrespects the Supreme Court of Justice, in the person of its president, Maikel Moreno, through false accusations and the offer of rewards in the style of the cowboys and the wild and far west".
