Ilknur Şebnem ÖZTEMEL- TDO – The US-led coalition has admitted killing at least 188 civilians in its bombing campaign in Syria and Iraq, since 2014. Several operations are under investigation.
Spokesperson of Central Command (CENTCOM), which coordinates the anti-Isis Operation Inherent Resolve, said “in each of the incidents, the investigation assessed that although all feasible precautions were taken and the decision to strike complied with the law of armed conflict, unintended civilian casualties unfortunately occurred’.
The most sensational attack was conducted on 29 December, toa hospital near Mosul. U.S. military officials accused ISIS because of using civilian infrastructure like hospitals, mosques, schools and pharmaceutical plants as weapon storages and fighting positions.
A new report by Amnesty International claimed that at least 300 civilians were killed in just 11 air strikes by the coalition in Syria. It has been claimed that officials did not take adequate precautions to minimise civil deaths and damage.
