İlknur Şebnem Öztemel – TDO – On 10 December, İstanbul hit by twin bloody attacks. First one happened in front of the Vodafone Arena and the second one happened in Macka Park, where is almost a mile away from the stadium. It has been announced that The Kurdish Freedom Hawks(TAK) which is an arm of PKK, is responsible from deadly explosions. 30 police and 9 civilians died, 155 wounded including 14 in intensive care unit, in twin attacks.
The first explosion happened about 11:00 P.M., near Vodafone Arena where a significant match between two top rating soccer teams Beşiktaş and Bursaspor held. The second attack happened in Macka Park approximately a minute later. Police wanted to frisk a man acting abnormally, exploded himself.
After the attack 13 people were arrested and police detained 118 pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) officials over alleged links to PKK militants in a nationwide operation. Regarding the event President Erdoğan said “They should know that they would not get away with this; they will pay heavier prices”. After the event, a day of national mourning declared. Place of the attack renamed as ‘’ Şehit Tepe’’ after the event.
International Responses to Terrorist Attacks
President of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas said ‘We are in cooperation with Turkish nation.’’
President of Pakistan Memnun Husein said ‘’ We are together with Turkish nation.’’
President of Kirghizstan Almazbek Atambayev said ‘’ God protect Turkey; God protect our motherland.’’
President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev said ‘’ We are ready to work together with Turkey to international security and sustainability.’’
Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg said ‘’ We are determinant to fight against all terms of terrorism.’’
Secretary General of UN Ban Ki Moon said ‘’ I strongly condemned the attacks and I hope criminals will be brought to trial as soon as possible. ‘’
German Minister of Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier said ‘’We are mourning together with our alliances.’’ Also, Merkel called Erdoğan to convey her condolences.
British Minister of Foreign Affairs Boris Johnson said ‘’ We are together with Turkey in fighting against terrorism.’’
National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said ‘’ Our prayers are with you’’.
President of Russian Federation Vladimir Putin said ‘’ I condemn this immoral and flagitious attack. I am sure that criminals and instigators will pay for it’’.
Also, Spain, France, Azerbaijan, Canada, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan condemned bloody attacks.
Stop PKK Movements in EU
A member of European Parliament, Tomas Zdechovsky, tweeted as: ‘’ 29 dead in İstanbul. No more tolerance for terrorist stop PKK ISIS and ban them for the EP.’’ Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu re-tweeted as ‘’ Thank you Tomas, this is exactly what we want to see from the EU institutions and its member states’’.
Terrorist attacks in Istanbul Besiktas has also echoed in many international media outlets including The New York Times, CNN, BBC, The Guardian, The Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal and The Independent.
