TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTRY RESPONDS TO UK REGRDING CYPRUS

12/06/2020

Serhat TUNAR -TDO- Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hami Aksoy, British sovereign bases regions for military purposes other than the opening of areas for civilian use in the application of the agreement to enter into the Ministry gave a written answer to the question.

Hami Aksoy, in his answer on the subject, said: "the regulation signed between the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GKRY) and the United Kingdom in 2014, on the use of real estates in sovereign British bases on the island by property owners has come into force.

As we stated at the time of the signing of this agreement, it is unacceptable that the guarantor Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot side, which signed the 1960 treaties, should not consult on the content of this arrangement, which would mean a change in the status of the bases region, in a timely manner.

In this context, we support the statements of the TRNC authorities on this issue.

In this region, not only the Greek Cypriots but also the Turkish Cypriots have immovable properties, inalienable rights and interests.

The United Kingdom, as a guarantor, once again ignored the Turkish Cypriots when this arrangement was introduced, damaging the balance between the parties on the island, the principle of political equality and therefore efforts towards the settlement of the Cyprus issue."
