İrem UZUN -TDO- In a major blow to the president, Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, said in bombshell evidence he was forced to work with Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani against his will, and criticized the White House and state department for failing to provide records.A senior U.S. diplomat told lawmakers on Wednesday that President Donald Trump expressly ordered him and others to help pressure Ukraine into investigating a political rival of the president. The ambassador’s statements have provided some of the most significant testimony to date in the House of Representatives impeachment inquiry.
Sondland, a wealthy hotelier who donated $1m to Trump’s inaugural committee, is the witness who most alarms officials at the White House, according to U.S. media reports. He has been described as one of the so-called “three amigos” the Trump administration used to bypass normal state department channels to Ukraine.
The ambassador testified that he told Vice President Mike Pence in September that U.S. security aid to Ukraine had been stalled apparently because of Trump’s demand for the investigations. Trump has said he did nothing wrong and specifically denied any quid pro quo. On Wednesday, the president said he does not know Sondland well, but he seems like a “nice guy”.
