TRUMP ANGERS CHINA BY SIGNING HUMAN RIGHTS AND DEMOCRACY ACT TO SUPPORT HONG KONG PROTESTERS

İrem UZUN -TDO- Donald Trump has signed into law legislation backing pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, angering Beijing which has condemned the bill as “full of prejudice and arrogance”.China has warned the U.S. it could take "firm counter-measures" if Washington continues to show support for pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kongand said attempts to interfere in the Chinese-ruled city were doomed to fail.

Protesters in Hong Kong responded by staging a “Thanksgiving” rally, with thousands, some draped in U.S. flags, gathering in the heart of the city. “The rationale for us having this rally is to show our gratitude and thank the U.S Congress and also President Trump for passing the bill,” one of the protestors said.

The new law requires Washington to monitor Beijing's actions in Hong Kong. Among other things, Hong Kong's special status means it is not affected by U.S. sanctions or tariffs placed on the mainland. The bill also says the US should allow Hong Kong residents to obtain US visas if they have been arrested for being part of non-violent protests.

Gao Feng, a spokesman for China’s commerce ministry, did not comment directly on whether the law would affect trade talks, saying there were no new details of their progress to disclose.“I signed these bills out of respect for President Xi, China, and the people of Hong Kong,” the president said in a statement on Wednesday. “They are being enacted in the hope that leaders and representatives of China and Hong Kong will be able to amicably settle their differences leading to long term peace and prosperity for all”.
