İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO- American President Donald Trump hosted Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al- Abadi in the White House.
At the beginning of the meeting, Trump praised Abadi as they were doing ‘’good job’’ in the fight against Deash and recognized ‘’ hard work’’ of Iraqi soldiers in thewar to retake Mosul, second largest city of Iraq.
Later Abadi asserted that the new American administration had assured him that American support would be expanded. In his speech, Abadi said, “We have been given assurances that the support will not only continue but will accelerate”, in United States Institute of Peace. He added “I think this administration wants to be more engaged in fighting terrorism’’.
None of the leaders explained neither the details of the plan nor the American role might be after Iraqi forces retake Mosul.
Trump criticized his predecessor Barack Obama for failing to negotiate an agreement that would have enabled American forces to stay. American ground troops withdrew from Iraq in 2011. He said “Certainly, we shouldn’t have left. We should never ever have left’’.
American Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson and Jared Kushner, the president’s senior advisers, Iraqi defense and oil ministers and Fuad Hussein a senior official from the Kurdish autonomous region in northern Iraq, was also presentat the meeting.
Trump was first supported theAmerican invasion of Iraq but later he opposed.
Recently, Abadi became a popular character in Turkey as he called Turkish soldiers to be deployed from Bashika Military Camp where Turkish forces invited by local authorities.
