Greece became the 10th member of the European Community (EC) back in 1981. It had a rocky road towards EC membership, as Germany and Holland, and to a lesser degree France, had objections that have been dating back to the 1970s. These objections were overcome thanks to the persistence and political acumen of Konstantinos Karamanlis, first prime minister of Greece after the fall of the military junta. It is remarkable that Karamanlis not only overcame the objections of key EC players, but also sidestepped Greek public opinion that was 60% against EC membership.
