THE RESULTS OF LOCAL ELECTIONS IN HUNGARY

Serhat TUNAR -DG- The joint candidate of opposition parties won the capital Budapest in local elections held in Hungary. According to unofficial election results, in the capital Budapest, Gergely Karacsony, a joint candidate of opposition parties, won 50.8 per cent, while Istvan Tarlos, a candidate of the governing coalition Fidesz (Hungarian citizens ' Union) and the Christian Democratic People's party (KDNP), won 44 per cent.

The opposition in 13 regions of Budapest and the Fidesz-KDNP candidate in 7 regions won the election. In 13 of the country's 23 major cities, the Fidesz-KDNP and in 10, the opposition candidates who entered the election in alliance were victorious.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on the results of the election that the Fidesz-KDNP alliance is still the strongest political formation in Hungary.

Noting that his party has ruled the capital Budapest for 9 years, Orban added that they lost the capital in these elections, but that they were ready to cooperate with the newly elected mayor for the benefit of Budapest.
