According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, around 59.5 million people have been displaced by political, ethno-cultural and/or religious conflicts, persecution, or disasters, and 19.5 million of them are refugees. Having triggered the worst refugee crisis since the World War II, the war in Syria has left almost 12 million people in desperate need of humanitarian aid. There are 7.6 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) while over 4 million people have taken refuge in Syria’s immediate neighbours - Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq (UNHCR 2015).
