When the Arab Spring began, Saudi Arabia faced a dilemma of avoidance or intervention. The first preference of the Saudi administration, the primary objective of which is the security and continuity of the Saudi dynasty looked like avoiding the effects of the Arab Spring, but as the Arab Spring spread rapidly, the Saudi administration added the strategy of intervention to avoidance, though this may sound contradictory. Saudi Arabia becoming more interventionist against the Arab Spring was chiefly caused by the effects of the uprisings reaching the Gulf.
