Serhat TUNAR -TDO- (13.02.2020) - In Italy, a critical vote was held in the General Assembly for Salvini, who was a member of the Senate, the upper wing of Parliament. The Senate has voted to lift the immunity of Matteo Salvini, the League party leader who, during his time at the Interior Ministry, requested a trial for misconduct for failing to allow irregular migrants rescued in the Mediterranean to disembark for days.
The vote removed the immunity of Salvini, who is still the main opposition leader, with the votes of the ruling party senators. This opened the way for Salvini to be tried for misconduct in an investigation in the city of Catania. League party senators did not attend the session in protest.
Speaking to Italian news agency ANSA about the matter, Salvini said he was not concerned about the lifting of his immunity, adding: "I knew it. I'm extremely comfortable and proud of what I've done. I'll do it again as soon as I get back in government."
