İrem UZUN -TDO- Russia will suspend entry of Chinese citizens to its territory starting from Thursday, Russian authorities in charge of coronavirus prevention said in a statement. From 12 am local time on February 20, Russia will “temporarily suspend the passage of citizens” from China to enter its territory “for the purpose of employment, for private, educational, and tourist purposes,” said a statement from the Kremlin carried by state-run news outlet TASS. "The restrictions will not affect transit passengers," Russian authorities added.
Travel restrictions of some form to prevent the spread of the disease, which has now killed more than 1,800 people, have been imposed by many countries to ease the risks of its spread. A Russian woman aboard a quarantined cruise ship off the coast of Japan was found to have contracted the disease. Two previous cases found in Russia, one in the Siberian city of Chita and one the Tyumen region, both involved Chinese nationals. They have both recovered and have been discharged from hospital. The Russian government previously announced the closure of the country’s 4,200-kilometer border with China, one of the longest in the world. It has also halted most of Russian air traffic to China and suspended all trains connecting the two countries.
