RUSSIA CONSIDER US “HIGHEST EVER” SANCTION ON IRAN AS ILLEGITAME

Selin ATAY-TDO-Trump told reporters during Oval Office meeting with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison that the new sanctions represent the "highest sanctions ever imposed on a country". He also added that Tehran is now” broke” in the wake of the U.S. maximum pressure campaign.

Later, Donald Trump said that he expected the sanctions to work on Iran. Trump added that the military option could also work, but he hoped that Washington will never have to resort to it. According to Trump, he is “showing great restraint” by not “going into Iran”, because “going into Iran would be a very easy decision... the easiest thing.”

The sanctions are the latest in a growing sanctions regime on the country, designed to tighten the screws and stop Tehran’s sponsorship of terrorism in the region.“They've been the number one country worldwide of terror between sponsoring terror and doing it themselves,” he said in the Oval Office.

Washington also threatened to impose sanctions against any entity dealing with Iran. However, The Russian Foreign Ministry has condemned the latest batch of sanctions introduced against Iranian institutions, calling them "illegitimate".

"This will not affect our approaches to Iran. As we planned, we will continue to cooperate with Iran in the banking sector. This will have no effect [on Russia's position]," Russian Foreign Ministry Second Asian Department Director Zamir Kabulov said.
