Selin ATAY-TDO- Russian President Vladimir Putin said Saturday that Russia deems Alexander Lukashenko the legitimate president of Belarus.

During a televised interview, "We recognize the legitimacy of the presidential elections in Belarus. And as you know, I have congratulated Alexander Lukashenko on his victory," Putin said.

The Russian leader recalled that Belarus had invited the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to monitor the elections, though they did not come.

"This immediately makes us think that, in fact, a position on the results of the elections had already been formulated," Vladimir Putin said.

The Russian President said that he "has every reason" to doubt the honesty of those who oppose to the results of the Belarusian elections.

In Belarus, incumbent President Lukashenko's election on 9 August was held on 6 August. after winning the term, the opposition refused to recognize the results, which led to mass protests.

The European Union does not recognize the results either. Also, the European Union has threatened to impose sanctions on individuals accountable for violence, repression and election fraud.

According to a joint statement by the missions of the USA, Great Britain, Switzerland and the European Union, they condemned the use of violence and repression against protesters in Belarus.

The missions also called on the Belarusian authorities to end intimidation and harassment of citizens for political reasons. Also they called to comply with their international obligations regarding fundamental democratic freedoms and human rights.
