Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO-  The arrest of opposition governor Sergey Furgal, responsible for the Khabarovsk region in eastern Russia, has caused a public backlash.

The Governor of the Khabarovsk Region, Sergey Furgal from the opposition party, was detained for alleged "organized crime".

Tens of thousands of people protested in Russia’s Far East in a rare display of opposition to President Vladimir V. Putin in the country’s vast hinterland, chanting “Putin Resign”.

Protestors were demanding the release of a regional governor arrested this past week on suspicion of multiple murders.

According to local media, a few thousand people attended the protests, but non-governmental organizations said 5,000 to 30,000 protesters attended the demonstrations.

Furgal is accused of playing a role in the abduction and murder of business people from 2004 to 2005.

The hearing was closed to the public at the request of the prosecutor's office and it was decided that Furgal should remain in custody until 9 September.
