PENTAGON: WE WON'T HIT IRAN'S CULTURAL VALUES

08/01/2020

Serhat TUNAR -TDO- The threat to destroy Iranian landmarks made by President Donald Trump a few days ago has not been reciprocated at the Pentagon. United States Defense Secretary Mark Esper said the country's historical and cultural values would not be targeted if the current tensions with Iran escalated into a conflict.

In an interview with the New York Times, Defense Secretary Esper responded in a statement to the question of whether cultural sites would be targeted as President Donald Trump said they would comply with the law of armed conflict.

Esper said he thought differently from Donald Trump, who argued that shooting cultural structures without military features would be a war crime under the law of armed conflict, arguing that such areas should be legitimate targets.
