Serhat TUNAR -TDO- No progress can be made on trade talks between the European Union and the UK, which must be completed by the end of 2020. The fourth round of talks between the two sides last week also failed to produce results.
Michel Barnier and his British counterpart David Frost, who led the negotiations on behalf of the European Union, held a 4-day meeting via video conference as part of the measures taken due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
Michel Barnier says the talks have been blocked, particularly in areas such as fishing, fair competition for trade, protection of fundamental rights and management of future relations. Speaking to reporters on the issue, Barnier said there had been no progress in the negotiations.
Barnier said the talks were too comprehensive and the UK side did not want to give more time to the talks, adding: "as the European Union we are open to extending the negotiations and the transition process."
