NETANYAHU TO MEET WITH TRUMP

Nuran YILDIRIM – TDO – According to a statement made by White House spokesman Sean Spicer, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump will hold their first meeting on February 15.

It was stated that the meeting will strengthen the relations between the two countries. It is expected that Netanyahu would ask Trump on increasing sanctions against Iran, especially the ballistic missile program.

Upon the invitation by the White House, Netanyahu published a statement saying, "it is my intention to discus with Trump cooperation between us on issues vital to the security and welfare of both nations."

In this context, it is expected that Netanyahu will use the meeting with Trump to cooperate with many other issues. Also, the Syrian and Israeli-Palestinian peace process would possibly take place in the agenda of the meeting.

In the past week, Trump has signed a presidential decree to announce the launch of Mexican border wall Project and he defended the wall by giving an example of Israel's Egyptian wall. Following that, Netanyahu made a statement on Twitter in order to support Trump and he wrote, “President Trump is right. I built a wall along Israel's southern border. It stopped all illegal immigration. Great success. Great idea.”

Netanyahu was exposed to criticism in Mexico on this statement and was expected to apologize to Mexico. In this sense, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto are expected to make a phone call in order to strengthen Israeli-Mexican relations that have been ruined by the wall issue.
