Serhat TUNAR -TDO- The United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) plans to launch a spacecraft next year as part of preparations it has launched for meteorites likely to hit Earth in the future. The spacecraft will attempt to change direction by hitting asteroids approaching Earth.
Dozens of asteroids pass near Earth every year. The 1998 or2 meteorite, which is expected to pass about 6 million kilometres from Earth on Wednesday (yesterday), is just one of them. The meteorite, which has a diameter of about 2.5 kilometers, has the potential to open a 10km-wide crater on Earth if it hits Earth, according to NASA officials.
The fact that the 1998 or2 meteorite will pass near the Earth is not a concern at the moment. The real concern is that the asteroid in question is orbiting the sun in unity with the Earth.
