MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE: CONVICTED BUT POSSIBLY INNOCENT

27/11/2016

In 1989, 5 black and Latino teenagers –who later would be known as the Central Park Five- were convicted of the rape and battery of Patricia Meili. Meili, who was a 28 year old investment banker at the time, was violently assaulted while jogging in Central Park. When her body was found around 01.30 am, she was about to die. She was brutally raped and beaten; her skull was fractured so badly that her left eye was removed from the socket and she was suffering from severe blood loss and hypothermia when found. The initial medical prognosis was that either she would die or stay in a coma due to her injuries. Although she managed to recover miraculously she had no memory of the attack or the events up to an hour before the attack because of severe trauma.By Ceren Bregeon
