Serhat TUNAR -TDO- United States Vice President Mike Pence has visited Iraq, where anti-government demonstrations have been underway for nearly 2 months. Mike Pence's trip to Erbil, the capital of Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), was considered by experts to be an attempt to show that the White House's claim that it turned its back on Kurdish forces was untrue.
Pence crossed into Erbil after meeting with United States troops at the Aynu al-Assad base west of Enbar for Thanksgiving dinner. Addresses Pence visited in Iraq were not announced prior to the visit due to security concerns.
Mike Pence met with Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdulmehdi by phone while he was at Aynu al-Assad base and visited KRG President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Mesrur Barzani at Erbil International Airport.
Pence and Abdulmehdi discussed strengthening relations and solidarity between the two countries, as well as actions and reforms to respond to the demands for reform expressed at anti-government demonstrations in Iraq.
