Serhat TUNAR -TDO- German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in a speech to parliament in Berlin on Wednesday, said Europe needed NATO to defend itself and NATO needed Turkey because of its strategic position.
In his statement, the German Chancellor said that Turkey must do everything in its power to remain in NATO, and that Turkey's strategic position is of paramount importance to the alliance.
Stressing that it is in their interests to protect NATO, Merkel compared the importance of the alliance to the Cold War era. The German Chancellor also claimed that Europe had no means of self-defense outside NATO.
French President Emmanuel Macron has criticized NATO over Turkey's Syria operation, saying the alliance was brain dead. Macron also added that Europe should create a European Defense Force independent of NATO.
