27/07/2020

Serhat TUNAR -TDO- Salvatore Martello, who serves as the mayor of Italy's Lampedusa Island, said asylum seeker arrivals to the island had increased and the central government should declare a state of emergency on the island.

According to local media reports, asylum seeker arrivals in Lampedusa, which is on the migration route in the central Mediterranean, continue to increase day by day.

Italian security forces were said to have stopped 7 boats carrying about 200 migrants near Lampedusa a few days ago, and there are already 1027 migrants on the island, and the capacity of the migrant registration centre has also been filled.

The mayor of Lampedusa, Salvatore Martello, said in a statement: "The situation has now become unmanageable. If the government doesn't issue a' state of emergency ' resolution, I will. Our immigration registration centre is not capable of welcoming more immigrants. The responsibility for this emergency cannot be borne on the mayor alone and the Lampeduals. The registration centre on the island currently accommodates over a thousand people, which is 10 times the projected capacity."
