LEBANESE PRIME MINISTER RESIGNS




Serhat TUNAR -TDO- Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri has announced his resignation following protests across the country. Hariri stated that he would submit his resignation to President Michel Aoun. Saad al-Hariri called on Lebanese to maintain civil peace in the country.

After deteriorating economic conditions and widespread allegations of corruption by members of the government, Prime Minister Hariri decided to step down after the protests, which began 12 days ago, grew steadily and the government's reform package failed to quell the protests.

The reform package envisioned halving the salaries of presidents, ministers and MPs. There were also planned cuts in support paid to some government agencies and bureaucrats.

In a country dominated by the economic crisis, the public took to the streets after news that WhatsApp speeches would be taxed.
