Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- Italy's Foreign Ministry has announced that it supports a call by United Nations Special Representative for Libya Stephanie Williams for a humanitarian ceasefire in Libya.
United Nations Special Representative to Libya Stephanie Williams called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Libya due to the start of Ramadan.
The ministry recalled the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims around the world, saying, "On this occasion, Italy strongly supports the call of UN Deputy Secretary General, Special Representative to Libya Stephanie Williams, for a humanitarian ceasefire in Libya. Italy hopes that all countries and international organizations participating in the Berlin Process will openly associate themselves with this call, which is the first step towards a real and lasting ceasefire," the statement said.
Noting that clashes have intensified in Libya in recent weeks, the statement emphasize that there may be opportunities to ease the difficulties and suffering experienced by many vulnerable people, including irregular migrants, to stop weapons during Ramadan, to combat the outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19).
