ISSUE OF REFUGEES BRINGS TOGETHER THE ORTHODOX AND THE CATHOLIC WORLDS

27/11/2016

Efforts at bringing together the Catholic and the Orthodox world have ledt o significant steps being taken over the past five years. Today the representatives of the two faiths no longer avoid meeting. The reasons behind Christian unification would take a lot of time to examine. However, the Catholic and the orthodox churches have been in close contact, especially since the tragedy of the Arab Spring.A new meeting is set to take place on April 16th. The point chosen for the meeting of the leaders of two churches is the island of Lesbos, which is just 5.5 kilometres off the coast of Turkey. According to Athens, the two leaders want to draw attention to the issue of migration and refugees.A strange aspect of the event is that Patriarch Barthelomeos, who is a citizen of the Republic of Turkey, will welcome Pope Francis on behalf of Greece. Barthelomeos will be accompanied by other Orthodox clergymen and Greece’s embittered Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
Following their meeting, Patriarch Barthelomeos and Pope Francis are expected to sign an international declaration aimed at drawing attention to the refugee crisis.News Centre
