ISRAELI COURT JAILS ICON RAED SALAH FOR 28 MONTHS

11/02/2020

İrem UZUN -TDO-  An Israeli court on Monday sentenced the head of the outlawed northern branch of the Islamic Movement, Sheikh Raed Salah, to 28 months in prison for "inciting to terror" in a series of speeches he made after a Palestinian attack in July 2017 killed two Israeli policemen at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem. Salah has denounced the charges against him as false and said following his sentencing that all the proceedings in the case were "far from the truth."

Salah was also found guilty of "supporting an illegal organization" in Facebook posts from 2015 and 2016, in which he called his supporters to commit "acts of violence or terrorism" while speaking in favour of his movement.  The Haifa court on Monday also noted that 61-year-old Salah made the criminal remarks on three separate occasions following the Jerusalem shooting.  The prosecution was quoted in the ruling as saying that Salah's deeds "harmed the security of the state and its citizens," and considering the preacher's prominence, "have high potential to cause damage".

In an exclusive interview with Anadolu Agency, Khaled Zabarqa, Salah's lawyer, said that Israel’s endless bids to silence Sheikh Raed Salah were meant to pave the way for announcing the controversial peace plan in the Middle East. Salah, an Arab Israeli, can appeal the sentence within 45 days, the court said. His attorneys said Monday they would consult about a possible appeal to the district court.
