ILLEGAL JEWISH SETTLEMENTS IN PALESTINE AND PRESIDENT’S ADVISER JARED KUSHNER

İlknur Şebnem Öztemel – TDO – Israel announced that it would establish a new settlement in the occupied West Bank, the first since the late 1990s in spite of the decision of Israel’s Supreme Court to reject the government plan since the selected area is privately owned by Palestinians.

Prime Minister’s Office stated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was making good on a commitment to the settlers of Amona and had ordered the formation of a committee to locate a new site where they could rebuild their homes.

Yesterday Israeli police carrying out the court’s order evicted Amona settlers. During protests and fighting, 20 officers were injured.  Youngsters were chanting as "A Jew doesn't evict a Jew!”. Demonstrations resulted with a government order to build more settlements in the territory.

Before, Israel declared plans for 3,000 more settlement homes in the West Bank, the third such declaration in 11 days since U.S. President Donald Trump took office.

Regarding his choices for ambassador to Israel, plans to move the American Embassy to Israel to Jerusalem and economic support provided to settlement projects showed that unlike Obama, Trump and his son-in-law will give open support to Jews.

Trump’s son-in-law and adviser, Jared Kushner, broker illegal Jewish settlements in Bet El and West Bank.  Avi Lavi, 46, who has lived in Bet El for more than 40 years, said "He will stand up for our interests. I suppose he will lean in our favor”.  He added    "He'll be fair, as opposed to Obama, whose policy leaned always towards the Arabs."

Roi Margalit, manager of the Bet El Yeshiva, a seminary complex with around 400 students, said Kushner understood the position of Israeli settlers better than previous envoys.

Regardless of previous speeches of Mahmoud Abbas and Benjamin Netanyahu to follow two state solutions, some of Kushner's supporters in Bet El appear to have a different direction. The head of the local council, Shai Alon, said "The two-state solution is a scam and it’s not going to happen’’. It seems like the problematic situation in the Middle East will become worse in Trump’s era.
