HUNDREDS OF CARS BURNED ON NEW YEAR'S EVE IN FRANCE

Serhat TUNAR -TDO- More than two hundred vehicles were torched on New Year’s Eve in Strasbourg, France. About 20 police officers were also slightly injured during the events that continued throughout New Year's Eve. Several people were detained in connection with the burning of the vehicles, including two children aged 10.

Robert Herrmann, deputy head of security at the Strasbourg Municipality, said they found that vehicles were deliberately set on fire at several parking spots.

12 vehicles were burned in Mulhouse, on the French border with Germany, and 2 in Colmar, known as the tourist city. About 50 garbage bins were also set on fire in these two cities. A team of 250 National Police, 50 municipal police and 70 riot police (CRS) were deployed at Mulhouse.

However, a 30-year-old was also killed during the fireworks displays, while more than 50 others were injured.

France's Interior Ministry announced on New Year’s Eve that 100 thousand police and gendarmerie teams and 40 thousand firefighters were on duty throughout the country.
