GREEK GOVERNMENT SEEKS TO BOOST YOUNG POPULATION

06/02/2020

Serhat TUNAR -TDO- In Greece, parliament passed a draft law stipulating that 2 thousand Euros be paid once for every child born in the country by 2020.

Greece's government, which wants to encourage young families to have children in particular, aims to increase low birth rates.

The annual income of eligible families to benefit from the allowance should be below 40 thousand euros. For those who come from countries that are not members of the European Union, they must have lived in Greece for at least 12 years.

In Greece, the population began to decline for the first time in the country's modern history due to the decline in marriage and birth rates. According to data released by the Greek statistical agency (ELSTAT), the number of deaths in the country in 2018 topped the number of those born.

Experts point to a number of reasons for the decline in the birth rate, including one linked to years of austerity measures imposed on Greece.
