GLOBAL WARMING NEGATIVELY AFFECTS ANTARCTICA

Serhat TUNAR -TDO- Ukrainian scientists working in Antarctica, when they woke up one morning, saw that there was a snow-white abdominal red around the research stations.

The researchers soon realized that this was a microscopic snow moss, also known as 'Chlamydomonas nivalis'.

This natural phenomenon, also known as 'watermelon snow', is a case caused by chlorophyll, as well as green algal species Chlamydomonas nivalis, containing secondary red carotenoid pigment. Unlike most freshwater algae, these cryophilic algae thrive in frozen water.

According to the researchers, these algae are formed in the snow when the air warms up faster than normal. According to the statement from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, it is not a good sign that this phenomenon began to appear in the region of the research station in Antarctica.

The algae formed also contribute to global warming because it covers the white snow surface reflecting the sun's rays and turns it into a darker color, and this is called a recycling helix. In other words, a natural phenomenon caused by global warming causes more global warming and this spiral can enter an irreversible process after a point.
