EUROPEAN COUNTRIES BEGIN BORDER CONTROLS

27/11/2016

European countries have been taking measures to stem the flow of refugees. Members of the European Union have begun carrying out Id checks at their border.
Following Sweden, Denmark has announced that it would implement ID checks and that the temporary measures would be enforced at its German border. The measure will be implemented for a period of 10 days and extended if necessary.
A day before the Danish decision, Sweden had begun implementing comprehensive passport and Id checks at its Danish border to prevent refugees. Danish Prime Minister Lars Rasmussen ha said that they were forced to take similar measures after Sweden’s decision.
“WE DO NOT WANT TO BECOME THE TARGET OF IMMIGRANTS”
Speaking at a press conference, Rasmussen said that Denmark was a bridge between Europe and Scandinavia and added “We no longer want to see immigrants going up and down our highways. This government does not want Denmark to become a country targeted by immigrants for asylum applications.”
Stating that he did not think the measures would help reduce the number of immigrants, the Danish Prime Minister added that those not applying for asylum in Denmark would be turned back from the border crossings. Rasmussen said “We will find more and more countries implementing temporary internal border controls unless the European Union can protect its external borders. This is a serious situation and it is not a good time for it. It will have a negative impact on welfare. I am a believer in free passage.”
