EU TO ENCOURAGE ARMS PRODUCTION PROJECTS

13/11/2019

Serhat TUNAR -TDO- The European Union has given approval to defense projects involving independent arms production from the United States.

The 13 projects, approved by European Union Defence Ministers Meeting in Brussels, include patrol vessels, signal jamming systems and ballistic missile tracking technologies.

The structured permanent cooperation (PESCO), which aims to increase cooperation in the field of Defence among member states, was established in December 2017 by a decision of the Council of the European Union. Currently, 25 European Union countries are participating in PESCO.

France, as it is known, is the biggest supporter of PESCO, with 47 joint projects under way. French President Emmanuel Macron argues that NATO, led by the United States, is losing its influence and there needs to be stronger defense cooperation within the European Union.
