Serhat TUNAR -TDO- The European Parliament sentenced Greek parliamentarian Ioannis Lagos for tearing up the Turkish flag during a speech at a session on the humanitarian situation on the Greek islands held in Brussels in January. The far-right Greek parliamentarian Lagos was sentenced to 7 days of non-appropriation and 4 days of non-participation in parliamentary activities.
The president of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, announced in Strasbourg, France, that Lagos had been given disciplinary action for using derogatory language and tearing up the paper symbolizing the national flag.
Sassoli stated that Ioannis Lagos was given a 7-day deprivation of allowance and a 4-day penalty for not participating in parliamentary activities.
Sergey Lagodinsky, Co-Chairman of the European Union-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Commission, and Nacho Sanchez Amor, Rapporteur of the European Parliament for Turkey, reacted strongly to this situation.
