Selin ATAY-TDO-As hundreds of convicted murderers and rapistswere released under a good-behavior reward program, Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has offered big bounties tothose who catchthem as “dead or alive”. Duterte said he would be happier if they were caught dead rather than alive.
At a press conference, Duterte announced the release of about 21 thousand prisoners who benefited from the good-behavior reward program, but 1,700 criminals did not fall under that reward program as they were convicted murderers and rapists.
“The one million prize is available to those who can capture them dead or alive. But maybe dead would be a better option. I will pay you smiling,” he told reporters late on Tuesday.
The Filipino leader announced a reward of 1 million pesos (£108,500) for every criminal caught. So far, about 700 prisoners who heard Duterte's call to surrender have surrendered spontaneously.
Duterte’s latest remarks are likely to outrage opponents who accuse him of deliberately inciting vigilantism. Duterte’s office rejects that accusations and says his tough talk is endearing him to millions of Filipinos.
