CHINA TO IMPOSE RESTRICTIONS ON ALL U.S. DIPLOMATS IN THE COUNTRY

İrem UZUN -TDO- Beijing said it has imposed restrictions on American diplomats in China to retaliate against Washington’s recent move to curb activities of Chinese diplomats in the U.S. On Friday, China’s Foreign Ministry said it recently sent a diplomatic note announcing “reciprocal restrictions” on the U.S. Embassy in Beijing and American consulates across the country, including the one in Hong Kong. The measures apply to senior diplomats and all other personnel at these U.S. missions, the ministry said, without giving details.

The announcement comes days after China threatened to respond to a new raft of U.S. restrictions on Chinese diplomats, such as a requirement to seek approval for university visits, holding cultural events with more than 50 people outside embassy grounds, or meetings with local officials. Last week, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said those measures were a response to long-established controls on American diplomats in China, drawing an angry rebuke from Beijing.

At a news conference on Friday, Zhao Lijian, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, slammed Pompeo for what he termed “endless fabricated accusations” against China, Anadolu Agency reported. Responding to the U.S. official’s claims that China used the coronavirus pandemic to “undermine democracy,” he said “Actually the horrible epidemic situation in the U.S. has meant the ‘emperor's new clothes’ of American democracy have been ripped away.”
