CHINA: TAIWAN MUST ACCEPT THE CHINESE STATUS

17/05/2020

İrem GÖL -TDO- The European governments were putting pressure on accepting Taiwan's acceptance to the World Health Assembly, which will take place on Monday online. The participation of Taiwan to the assembly is seen very important as its response to the pandemic has been very successful because of its experience the experience acquired during the 2003 SARS outbreak. However, China states that the Taiwanese presence in the Assembly can be possible only if Taiwan recognizes the Chinese status. Taiwan's health minister, Chen Shih-Chung, said: "We have no way to accept something that does not exist."

Former NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the former President of Poland Aleksander Kwasniewski, and the former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt said in a letter addressed to the Guardian: "It is regretful that geopolitics has prevented Taiwan from fully accessing the forums and services of the World Health Organization – not least at the WHO could have benefited from its expertise."

Taiwan had the observer status at the WHO for seven years until 2016. Since then, China has been blocking Taiwan's participation. China claims that Taiwan is using the current crisis and its situation in the WHO to achieve recognition internationally and within the United Nations system.
