CHINA HAS DOUBLED TROOP LEVELS IN HONG KONG

İrem UZUN -TDO- China has quietly more than doubled its deployment of mainland security forces in Hong Kong, according to foreign envoys and security analysts, to prepare for a potential worsening of unrest in the global financial center.

CNN reported that protests in Hong Kong turned violent over the weekend as demonstrators lit fires and threw Molotov cocktails and bricks. Police fired tear gas and blue dye from a water cannon into the crowd. More than 150 people were arrested over the weekend and 48 people were admitted to hospitals.

Last month, Beijing moved thousands of troops across the border into this restive city, which has been wracked by protests since June. The state news agency Xinhua described the operation as a routine “rotation” of the low-key force China has kept in Hong Kong since the city’s handover from Britain in 1997.

The city is on high alert ahead of events planned for Tuesday, which marks the founding of the People's Republic of China. The increase in military force is believed to be the largest assembly ever of active troops of the People's Liberation Army and other anti-riot personnel and equipment in Hong Kong.
