Selin ATAY-TDO- More than 7 million people have been ordered to close non-essential businesses and stay out of their homes due to an outbreak of the new type coronavirus (Kovid-19) in Washington State, USA.
Gov. Jay Inslee issued a sweeping statewide stay-at-home order Monday evening to help stem the spread of the deadly coronavirus that has killed at least 110 in Washington.
The emergency proclamation requires people to stay at home for at least two weeks unless it is absolutely necessary to leave for such essentials as groceries or medicine or for an essential job. It also requires a number of businesses to close that have remained open so far.
"This is a human tragedy on a scale we cannot project," Inslee said. "To be socially irresponsible during these times is to risk the lives of our loved ones."
Inslee announced the order Monday evening in a statewide televised address. It is similar to stay-home orders issued in other states, including California and Oregon. Health officials reported Monday there have been at least 110 coronavirus deaths in Washington and more than 2,200 confirmed cases.
The governor's office says the order will build on steps already taken to protect Washingtonians, including the closure of schools, restaurants, entertainment venues and other businesses where people congregate.
The order will close businesses and other public places, with the intention to reduce social interactions where this highly contagious virus can spread. Closings on businesses will happen 48 hours after signing the order. Grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations and other thing necessary for continued operations will remain open.
"We want to get back to normal as soon as possible," Inslee said. "The fastest way to get back to normal is to hit this hard."
