The political crisis in Burundi has been escalating with the approach of the 2015 Presidential elections. With President Nkurunziza desiring to continue to maintain his position for a third term after 10 years in power, people are reacting.
Hundreds of thousands of Burundians have protested against Nkurunziza seeking a third term. The main reason for the anti- Nkurunziza protests is him running for a third term. Despite the article of the agreement signed in 2000 between the government and armed groups which states “the head of state can only run for two terms”, Nkurunziza has announced that he will be running in the elections. When the Constitutional Court then declared that Nkurunziza had come to office through state appointment in 2005 and therefore there is no obstacle for him running for another term, opposition groups responded strongly.
