BORIS JOHNSON TO REQUEST ADDITIONAL TIME FROM EU

05/10/2019

Serhat TUNAR -TDO- According to Reuters, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that he would send a letter to the European Union to ask for an extension if no compromise was reached by October 19 on his country's exit from the European Union.

Reuters cited a government document sent to the Scottish court as the basis for this news.

Boris Johnson proposed to the European Union last Wednesday that the controversial clause in the Brexit agreement, which was rejected, would be replaced by a regulation that would keep Northern Ireland in special contact with the Union until 2025.

Donald Tusk, the President of the Council of the European Union, said that they were not convinced about the proposal of the new agreement that Britain presented to the European Union.

The proposal, which Boris Johnson said they made concessions, envisaged the abolition of a precautionary clause that could lead Northern Ireland and hence the entire UK to remain in the common market for an indefinite period.

The European Parliament Brexit Steering Group had agreed that the UK's new proposal did not form the basis for an agreement.
