Serhat TUNAR -TDO- Metropolitan Hilarion, a senior official of the Russian Orthodox Church, shared his views on the conversion of the Hagia Sophia Museum into a mosque on Russian state television on Saturday.
Metropolitan Hilarion said the idea of converting Hagia Sophia into a mosque was unacceptable and "we can't go back to the Middle Ages now."
Bishop Ilarion, who serves as head of the Department for relations with external churches, interpreted the idea of changing the status of Hagia Sophia as follows: “we believe that in the current circumstances this move is an unacceptable violation of religious freedom. Now we can't go back to the Middle Ages. We live in a multi-polar and multi-sectarian world. He must respect the feelings of believers.”
