News Centre -TDO- Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry announced that the Armenian army had prevented an attack on Azerbaijani positions in the Tovuz region of the border between the two countries by using artillery fire.
The statement stated that the Azerbaijani army responded and the Armenian soldiers withdrew with casualties and that 2 soldiers from the Azerbaijani army lost their lives and 5 soldiers were wounded in the conflict.
Hikmat Hajiyev, head of Azerbaijan's Foreign Policy Affairs Department, also issued a written statement on the issue.
Hajiyev said in a statement that the Armenian armed forces had clearly violated the ceasefire and opened fire on the positions of the Azerbaijani armed forces in the direction of the Tovuz region of the border between the two states, with support from artillery. Hajiyev stated that the Azerbaijani Armed Forces also responded with a counter-fire, which he said was clearly an incitement.
“Azerbaijani border troops have been deployed in the districts of Gazakh and Tovuz on the Azerbaijani side to prevent provocations and reduce cases that could lead to tension on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, " Hikmat Hajiyev said in his statement and continued: “Contrary to all these efforts, Armenia has continued to breach the border between the two countries while deliberately and systematically targeting civilians.
Such provocations by Armenia are carried out in order to involve the military-political organizations of which Armenia is a party to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict and to maintain its aggressive attitude towards Azerbaijan. Armenia's aggression against Azerbaijan, which has been going on for nearly 30 years, and the provocations along the border are also contrary to the legal documents of the military-political organizations of which Armenia is a member.
Armenia has carried out a military offensive against Azerbaijan in clear violation of the UN Charter and other legal international obligations and has occupied the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan and seven surrounding areas. UN Security Council resolutions 822, 853, 874 and 884 demand the complete and unconditional withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from occupied Azerbaijani territory.
Armenia's provocation along the border is another proof that Yerevan is unrelated to the negotiated settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict.
We call on the international community to strongly condemn Armenia's policy of occupation against Azerbaijan and its provocative actions along the border. Armenia is the party that is fully and solely responsible for the current situation.”
On the other hand, the Armenian Defense Ministry alleged its positions on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan had been bombed by the Azerbaijani army.
