İrem GÖL -TDO- According to Reuters, heavily armed police entered a favela in Rio known as Complexo do Alemao in order to raid on suspected drug traffickers. Police said they came under grenade and gunfire attack. As a result of the conflict between the drug traffickers and the police, at least 10 people lost their lives. The police raid drew people into streets of the neighbourhood which was under quarantine, provoking residents and activists.
A photographer from Reuters said when he arrived at the neighbourhood, most of the people had no masks or any other protective equipment, and they were gathered in a tight intersection under a drizzle. Acquaintances and family members of the dead embraced and consoled each other. Several residents complained that the government was offering no aid to contain the novel coronavirus, but was still engaging in violent police operations that risked spreading of the virus through low-income communities.
The police stated that the homicide detectives would investigate the incident as a standard practice. Yet, when they entered the neighbourhood, they encountered heavy grenade and gunfire attack several times and recovered dozens of high-powered weapons. One police officer was injured.
