Serhat TUNAR -TDO- The president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev dissolved the Parliament of Azerbaijan for a 5th term. A written statement from the Azerbaijani presidency said Aliyev had decided that early general elections would be held on February 9, 2020.
As it is known, the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) applied to President Aliyev earlier in the week to dissolve parliament and hold early general elections. Ilham Aliyev submitted the application for approval by the Constitutional Court and approved the ruling party's application after the court declared that the dissolution of Parliament was in accordance with the Constitution.
According to the Constitution of Azerbaijan, the president of Azerbaijan also has the right to dissolve parliament and call early elections.
The last parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan were held on 1 November 2015, and The New Azerbaijan Party won 71 seats in the 125-member assembly, gaining a majority.
However, opposition parties had largely boycotted the 2015 elections.
