Serhat TUNAR -TDO- Alexei Pushkov, a member of the Federation Council, the upper wing of the Russian parliament, said the only possible response to the United States ' new sanctions on Nord Stream-2 was a countermeasure, adding, "But Berlin cannot afford it."
Addressing German Chancellor Angela Merkel's announcement that they intend to decisively discuss the United States ' cross-border sanctions, Pushkov claimed on his social media account that the United States will increasingly resort to cross-border sanctions. Pushkov also said Merkel's concerns were useless. According to the Russian senator, the method that could be applied against the sanctions of the United States is to take countermeasures. But according to Pushkov, Germany, whatever its fury, can never afford it.
Earlier, the U.S. Senate had approved the defense budget, which includes sanctions on the Nord Stream-2 natural gas pipeline.
Assessing the decision, Merkel had said they opposed U.S. cross-border sanctions and intend to discuss it decisively.
