In his opening speech, Ambassador Christian Berger stated that the European Union was founded on fundamental values such as peace, democracy, equality and justice.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said in his speech, “67 years have passed since the Schuman Declaration which laid the foundations of the European Union. Following the wars affecting the whole continent, European countries, which have united the basic values of human rights, the rule of law, democracy, equality and justice, with a culture of tolerance, regardless of language, religion or race, have progressed in peace and prosperity.
Our country has embraced these universal values together with Europe, which is geographically and historically part of it, and contributed to the security, stability and welfare of Europe. Institutionally also within Europe, Turkey has all the efforts in this direction should be towards full EU membership.
Unfortunately, in the recent years, the European Union has begun to move away from the ideals and fundamental values it advocates, unlike its founder's aspirations. Extreme currents such as discrimination, xenophobia and anti-Islam lead to the erosion of the Union's culture of living together and to question its effectiveness and reliability in the international arena. This situation creates frustration and anxiety in the vast European geography that shares common values with the European Union.
o avoid this frustration and worries is possible by the EU turning away from dissociation and populism, to the unifying and inclusive approach inherent in it. Since the candidate countries as a strategic partner and continue strengthening the Union's understanding of reciprocity with Turkey it is ready to make all kinds of intimate and meaningful cooperation in this regard. Our hope is that the European Union overcomes the existing tests on which it is based. Europe is larger than the EU and the unity and solidarity needed by the vast European continent should be reestablished. Turkey is ready to contribute in this direction.
